Chelsea have opened talks over a possible move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez as they consider strengthening their goalkeeping options before the transfer window closes.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are interested in the Argentina international, with the 33-year-old’s situation at Villa leaving the door open for a late transfer.
Martinez’s future has become uncertain following the arrival of Zion Suzuki at Aston Villa and the collapse of his proposed move to Juventus. The goalkeeper is now considering his options as the transfer deadline approaches.
Chelsea’s interest comes after Robert Sanchez came under criticism for his performance in the Blues’ recent Premier League victory over Fulham.
The Spaniard’s error allowed Fulham to score, prompting fresh questions over Chelsea’s goalkeeping department.
Martinez, a World Cup winner with Argentina, could therefore emerge as an experienced option for Chelsea if the club decides to push ahead with the deal.
However, no agreement has been reached yet, with discussions continuing as Chelsea assess whether to make a late move for the Aston Villa star.
