President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former military Head of State, retired Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, on his 85th birthday, describing him as an outstanding Nigerian leader.
Tinubu said Babangida’s remarkable military career culminated in his emergence as the nation’s leader following the 1985 coup.
This was contained in a statement issued by Presidential Spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, on Monday in Abuja.
The president said Babangida had impacted Nigeria in significant ways, leaving enduring marks on the country’s political, economic and geographical landscape.
“Like him or not, former President Babangida impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has. His eight-year reign left enduring marks on our political, economic, and geographic landscape,” Tinubu said.
He said Babangida expanded Nigeria’s economy, established enduring infrastructure and created agencies and institutions that continued to serve the national interest.
“But for his foresight, wisdom, and sense of equity and fairness, many states in the federation might not exist today,” the president said.
Tinubu said Babangida’s name and legacy would remain indelible in Nigeria’s history because of his contributions to national development.
The president also acknowledged Babangida’s continued contributions to national discourse, in spite of his retirement from public life.
“Even in retirement, living a quiet life at his Minna Hilltop residence in Niger State, General Babangida continues to offer valuable counsel and guidance to the nation.
“His advice and wise counsel remain an inspiration to younger generations.”
The president wished the former military leader continued good health, strength and many more years of service to the nation.
“I wish you continued grace, good health, and renewed strength. May Almighty Allah keep you with us for many more years to come,” Tinubu said.
Also, Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda, on Monday congratulated former Military President, retired Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (IBB), on his 85th birthday.
Radda in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Mohammed, described Babangida as a statesman, whose contributions has left a lasting imprint on Nigeria’s political and administrative history.
The governor particularly acknowledged Babangida’s historic role in the creation of Katsina State on Sept. 23, 1987, alongside Akwa Ibom.
Radda said the creation of Katsina opened a new chapter of growth and development, giving the people greater opportunity to chart their own course.
“The people of Katsina will always remember IBB for giving our state its identity and creating the opportunity for our people to chart their own course of development.
“That singular decision remains one of the defining moments in our history,” Radda said.
According to him, Babangida has remained a respected national figure whose years of service and leadership continue to occupy an important place in Nigeria’s history.
“As you celebrate your 85th birthday, we join your family, friends and millions of Nigerians in thanking Almighty Allah for a life of service to our country.
“We pray that He grants you good health, peace of mind and many more years filled with His mercy and blessings,” the governor said.
