Magnitude 5.5 Earthquake Strikes Antofagasta, Chile

An intermediate magnitude 5.5 earthquake was reported early morning near Calama, Provincia de El Loa, Region de Antofagasta, Chile.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Monday, July 27th, 2026, at 4:57 am local time at an intermediate depth of 93. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in San Pedro de Atacama (pop. 11,000) located 73 km from the epicenter, Sierra Gorda (pop. 1,100) 95 km away, and Calama (pop. 166,300) 115 km away.
