Nigerian gospel singer Victoria Orenze has sparked reactions online after criticising some Christian leaders and worshippers whom she accused of prioritising personal gain over truth, justice and the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
In a strongly worded message shared on social media, Orenze expressed disappointment with individuals who claim to speak on behalf of God but, according to her, remain silent or supportive in the face of injustice and poor governance.
The singer alleged that some religious figures only endorse governments and political leaders because they benefit personally from them, rather than considering the impact of policies on the wider population.
“Whenever a few are benefiting from a government, they say the government is working because they don’t care about the good of the majority of Nigerians. They only care about their pockets and stomach,” she wrote.
Orenze further condemned what she described as “stomach Christianity,” accusing some ministers and churchgoers of using the name of God for personal profit while failing to uphold values such as compassion, integrity and accountability.
According to her, anyone who genuinely represents God cannot support selfishness, greed, wickedness or oppression.
“God does not support selfishness, wickedness, greed, pretense, hypocrites and all around evil,” she stated.
The gospel singer also warned that Nigerians are gradually reaching a breaking point, suggesting that public frustration over the country’s challenges continues to grow.
While emphasizing the importance of prayer, Orenze insisted that citizens must also continue to speak out against issues affecting the nation.
“We are praying and yet we will speak,” she added.
