Ijaw Women Advocates for Justice has called for strict adherence to due process and fairness in the ongoing judicial trial in the United Kingdom involving former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke.
The social group made the call at a news conference in Abuja, stressing that their intervention was not to defend any individual, but to uphold principles essential to justice and the rule of law.
Dr Timiebi Koripamo-Agary who read the text during the event, warned against attempts to turn the matter into a public spectacle, insisting that the proceedings must remain strictly within the judicial domain.
According to them, influencing public opinion while legal processes are ongoing undermines justice.
The group emphasised that every individual, regardless of status or past office, is entitled to a fair hearing, due process and the presumption of innocence.
The Ijaw Women Advocates for Justice also acknowledged Alison-Madueke’s past leadership roles, including her position as the first female president of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
“Her record should neither attract immunity nor prejudice, but rather a balanced and fair assessment.
“We stand in solidarity not to shield wrongdoing, but to ensure justice is done lawfully and without bias.
“We caution against media sensationalism and selective narratives, the group said.
They urged the public and media to refrain from “trial by media,” noting that justice must not be shaped by headlines but by evidence presented in court.
They maintained that they had deliberately avoided commenting on the substance of the case, which is before a court and instead focused on advocating fairness, due process and justice.
“Let the courts do their work. Let evidence speak for itself,” the group added.
Those present at the briefing include Dame Julie Donli, Mrs. Rosemary John-Oduone, Dr Stella Dorgu and Dr Duenize Ogon.
