Momentum is rapidly building around a potential presidential alliance between Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, as supporters intensify grassroots mobilisation under the emerging “OK Movement” ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The movement, which is pushing for a joint Obi-Kwankwaso ticket, has begun rolling out structures at national, zonal, and state levels, an early sign of coordinated efforts to consolidate political support and translate growing public interest into an organised electoral force.
Organisers say the initiative is aimed at harnessing the combined appeal of both politicians, positioning them as a formidable alternative in an increasingly fluid opposition landscape.
Amid this rising momentum, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), associated with former Bayelsa State governor Seriake Dickson, has moved to capitalise on the shifting dynamics by throwing its platform open to key opposition figures.
In a public appeal, the party urged Obi and Kwankwaso, currently aligned with the crisis-ridden African Democratic Congress, to defect and contest on its platform, offering a narrow two-week window to secure its presidential ticket.
The NDC’s outreach is also seen as extending to other opposition heavyweights, including Atiku Abubakar, as parties scramble to reposition ahead of looming electoral deadlines.
The urgency is driven in part by the timetable set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which has fixed May 30, 2026, for the submission of party membership registers and nomination of candidates.
At the same time, internal instability within the ADC continues to cast uncertainty over its viability as a coalition platform. The party is currently embroiled in a leadership dispute involving a faction led by former Senate President David Mark, with the Supreme Court yet to deliver a judgement.
Analysts say the convergence of these factors: the rise of the OK Movement, the search for a viable coalition platform, and tightening electoral timelines, is accelerating political realignments across the opposition.
While it remains unclear whether Obi and Kwankwaso will formalise a joint ticket or accept the NDC’s overtures, the growing mobilisation around their potential alliance signals a significant shift in the build-up to 2027.
