Founder of Omega Power Ministries, Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere, has stirred conversation after revealing in an interview with BBC Pidgin that over 1,000 men reportedly expressed interest in marrying his autistic daughter.

According to the cleric, he has now stepped back from the idea, citing concerns raised by close associates and reactions from the public. His comments have triggered debate, but they also opened up a broader conversation around care, dignity and the future of persons with special needs.

Explaining the motive behind his earlier position, Apostle Chibuzor said the thought was rooted in long term support and companionship, particularly as children with special needs grow older and their emotional and personal needs become more pronounced.

In his view, the conversation was less about a “challenge” and more about creating a stable, protective environment where such individuals can experience love, partnership and safety.

Expectedly, reactions have been mixed.
But beyond the controversy, the discussion has brought attention to a subject society often avoids.
What does companionship, care and independent living look like for people with special needs?
