Popular Nigerian fashion designer Seyi Vodi has stirred debate online following bold claims about his rise in the fashion industry. In a video shared by Stephen Akintayo, CEO of Gtext Homes, during a panel session, Seyi Vodi recounted the early days of his journey.
According to him, while many of his fellow corps members travelled to Aba to make clothes for personal use because it was cheaper, he saw something different, an opportunity. Rather than just sew for himself, he went with the mindset of producing and reselling.
He further revealed that his starting capital was his ₦3,600 allowance, commonly known as “alawee.” Fast forward to today, he claims he now earns up to $300,000 for a single outfit.
It was the kind of statement that was bound to shake the internet and it did.
While some Nigerians found the story inspiring, others questioned its realism, sparking debates around business narratives, exaggeration, and the fine line between motivation and myth.
Never one to stay silent, media personality Daddy Freeze added his voice, but with a heavy dose of sarcasm.
In his response, he jokingly shared his own “success story,” claiming his mother once gave him and his siblings bottles of groundnut, which he sold to fund a radio course, pointing out, in his own way, how easily such origin stories can sound.
The irony was not lost on anyone, because in today’s social media age, every success story is not just told.
It is scrutinised, and sometimes, the bigger the numbers, the louder the questions.
