Ahead of the August 8, 2026 governorship election in Osun State, lawmakers elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the National and State Assembly levels have endorsed the Accord Party and its candidate, Governor Ademola Adeleke, for re-election.
The endorsement was contained in a communiqué issued at the conclusion of a stakeholders’ meeting held in Osogbo. The communiqué, read by the Deputy Senate Minority Leader, Sen. Lere Oyewumi, cited Adeleke’s performance in infrastructure, workers’ welfare, healthcare, education, and democratic governance as the basis for the support.
“Having reviewed the governor’s performance in infrastructure development, workers’ welfare, healthcare, education, and democratic stability, we unanimously endorse and give our total support to His Excellency, Sen. Ademola Adeleke, for a second term in office in the interest of continuity, stability, and sustained progress for Osun State,” the communiqué stated.
The lawmakers clarified that the endorsement of Adeleke and Accord Party does not weaken the PDP’s presence in the state. “The party remains united and firmly established at the National Assembly caucus level, State Assembly level, Executive Council, Local Governments, Wards, and grassroots structures across the state,” the statement read.
A vote of confidence was also passed in the leadership of the PDP in Osun State, including Chairman Sunday Bisi, the State Working Committee, and party executives across all 30 local government areas and 332 wards. The communiqué warned that any alternative leadership lacks legitimacy and official backing.
The lawmakers appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the ongoing local government crisis, citing withheld allocations as causing hardship for teachers, healthcare workers, local government staff, retirees, and traditional institutions. They urged peaceful, law-abiding conduct by the public and reaffirmed their commitment to democratic principles.
The development follows reports that five PDP National Assembly members in Osun officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday, reflecting ongoing political realignments ahead of the election.
The lawmakers’ endorsement signals a strategic consolidation of support for Adeleke and emphasizes continuity, governance stability, and adherence to legal and democratic processes in Osun State.
