…USMC-Grade Attack Helicopters to Boost Low-Level Strike Operations

Nigeria’s Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has led a high-level Programme Management Review meeting with senior United States government officials and representatives of Bell Textron in San Diego, California, as the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) moves to fast-track the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters to strengthen its fight against rising insecurity.

According to a statement issued yesterday by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Headquarters Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the engagement focused on accelerating delivery timelines and ensuring programme discipline, in what the NAF described as a critical capability enhancement aligned with the CAS’ command philosophy of building a highly motivated, professional and mission-ready air force.

The AH-1Z Viper is a modern twin-engine attack helicopter and the primary attack platform of the United States Marine Corps. Designed for close air support, armed reconnaissance and precision strike missions, the aircraft is equipped with advanced avionics, a digital cockpit, helmet-mounted display systems and a sophisticated target sight system that enables accurate day-and-night operations in all weather conditions.

Powered by two General Electric T700-GE-401C engines and fitted with a four-blade composite rotor system, the AH-1Z offers improved agility, reduced vibration and enhanced survivability in hostile environments. It features a nose-mounted 20mm M197 three-barrel cannon and can be armed with a range of weapons, including AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, precision-guided rockets and air-to-air missiles, giving it the flexibility to engage both ground and aerial threats.

During the engagement, Air Marshal Aneke expressed appreciation to the United States government and Bell Textron for their cooperation, professionalism and transparency in the execution of the helicopter acquisition programme, noting that the structured review reflected the NAF’s emphasis on accountability, results and value for money.

“We deeply value the professionalism and openness demonstrated throughout this process, and we remain fully committed to working closely with our partners to ensure the timely and successful delivery of these platforms,” the CAS said.

He stressed that the acquisition of the AH-1Z helicopters goes beyond a mere fleet upgrade, describing it as a clear symbol of the enduring defence partnership between Nigeria and the United States, anchored on shared values, mutual trust and a common commitment to regional and global security.

According to him, the programme underscores a collective resolve to confront evolving security challenges through collaboration and sustained capability development, particularly in enhancing the NAF’s ability to deliver decisive airpower in support of ground forces.

Reaffirming the urgency attached to the project, Air Marshal Aneke assured the US team that the NAF would take all necessary measures to ensure the helicopters are delivered in the shortest possible time. He charged the programme management team to remain proactive and solutions-driven to complete production on schedule and within budget.

“Timelines and standards must be met concurrently. We must remain focused, innovative and results-oriented,” the CAS stressed.
