Abiodun Olawale-Cole, President of the Nigeria Rugby League Association (NRLA), has said that the association is intensifying efforts to position the country’s rugby league among the strong global contenders.
Olawale-Cole told NAN yesterday that improved governance, enhanced media engagement and increased sponsorship drives were central to the association’s global elevation strategy.
He noted that efforts have been geared towards grassroots rugby development through schools and community programmes to expand the nation’s talent pool.
The rugby league president said regular coaching clinics, referee training and administrators’ workshops were being organised to strengthen technical capacity and improve professionalism in the sport.
According to him, the NRLA is also strengthening ties with international rugby league bodies to secure exposure, promote knowledge transfer and increase participation in global competitions.
“We are building a solid foundation by investing in youth development and aligning our programmes with international standards,” he said.
He said that efforts were underway to boost both local and international visibility for Nigerian players through competitions, exchange programmes and digital platforms.
“With the commitment of stakeholders and support from government, rugby league is poised for growth in Nigeria and greater global recognition.
“Our goal is to make Nigeria a respected force in global rugby league and we are confident about the positive outcome of our efforts,” he said.
