Jonathan Demands Service, Humility, Integrity in Governance as Nigeria Steps into 2026

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerian leaders at all levels to embrace service, humility, and integrity in the conduct of governance, as the country enters the year 2026, calling on both leaders and citizens to renew their commitment to patriotism and national unity.

In a personally signed New Year message issued in Abuja on Wednesday, Jonathan said the beginning of 2026 should serve as a moment of hope, reflection, and collective resolve, stressing that leadership must be guided by a sincere commitment to the welfare of the people.

“As we move forward into 2026, let us renew our commitment to the ideals that bind us together as one people,” he said.
“Patriotism must be matched with a renewed sense of duty by citizens and leaders alike. Leadership at all levels must be anchored in service, guided by humility, integrity, and a sincere commitment to the welfare of the people.”

Jonathan said Nigeria’s progress depended on shared responsibility, mutual respect, and unwavering dedication to the national interest, noting that only through people-centred leadership could the country achieve stability and inclusive development.

Reflecting on the year gone by, the former president acknowledged that it had been marked by significant trials, including economic pressures and persistent insecurity, which he said had tested the resilience of Nigerians and brought hardship and loss to many families.

“These experiences remind us of the responsibility we bear toward one another and the importance of people-oriented leadership,” he said.

Despite the challenges, Jonathan said the enduring character of Nigerians had remained evident, pointing to the courage, solidarity, and quiet determination displayed across communities in difficult times.

“Even in these circumstances, our shared values, our diversity, and our collective belief in a better tomorrow have sustained us through uncertainty,” he said, describing resilience as one of Nigeria’s greatest strengths and the foundation for unity, peace, and lasting progress.

The former president prayed for a peaceful, healthy, and fulfilling year for Nigerians and their families, expressing hope that the nation would continue to advance steadily toward unity, justice, and shared prosperity in 2026.
