PSC Promotes Gumel to DIG, Elevates Scores of Senior Police Officers Nationwide

The Police Service Commission (PSC) on Thursday approved the promotion of several senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force to higher ranks after written examinations and oral interviews held at the Commission’s headquarters in Jabi, Abuja. The exercise was presided over by the PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (rtd).

At the apex of the promotion list, Assistant Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Usman Gumel was elevated to the rank of Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG). Gumel had been serving as the AIG in charge of the Community Policing Project (CPP) Department at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

Seven Commissioners of Police were also promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police. They are CP Ihebom Chukwuma of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Abuja; CP Maxwell Olatokunbo of the K9 Unit; CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, Delta State; CP Alonyenu Francis Idu, Bayelsa State; CP Lawal B. Ayodeji of the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, FCID Annex, Lagos; CP Agene Emmanuel, FCID Kaduna; and CP Vungmoh S.M. Kwaimo of the Railway Command.

In addition, 13 Deputy Commissioners of Police were promoted to Commissioners of Police, while 30 Assistant Commissioners of Police were elevated to the rank of Deputy Commissioners. The promotion exercise also saw 51 Chief Superintendents of Police move up to Assistant Commissioners, 542 Superintendents promoted to Chief Superintendents, 119 Deputy Superintendents to Superintendents, and 12 Assistant Superintendents to Deputy Superintendents.

Congratulating the newly promoted officers, PSC Chairman DIG Argungu urged them to justify the confidence reposed in them by embracing their new responsibilities with renewed dedication and professionalism. He reminded them that higher ranks come with greater expectations and called on them to remain committed to the protection of lives and property, the maintenance of law and order, and service to the nation with integrity.

Argungu reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to merit-based promotions in line with global best practices, stressing that regular and transparent promotion exercises are critical to deepening professionalism, accountability, and efficiency within the Nigeria Police Force.
