Zambia’s Chipolopolo has sounded a clear statement of intent ahead of AFCON, handing the captain’s armband to forward Fashion Sakala in a bold leadership shake-up announced by head coach Moses Sichone.
The changes were confirmed moments before Monday’s training session at the Pinata Sports Arena in Murcia, Spain, as the technical bench revealed a new captaincy hierarchy designed to sharpen focus and unity in camp.
Sakala steps up as captain, with Lubambo Musonda moving into the role of first assistant. Kings Kangwa, Frankie Musonda, and Benson Sakala complete the leadership group as second, third, and fourth assistants respectively.
Coach Sichone was quick to praise Musonda for his steady leadership, stressing that the changes were strategic rather than a demotion.
“Lubambo is still one of the captains; we just thought it necessary to make a few changes at that level,” Sichone said.
“I urge you all to support the new team leadership as we head to AFCON.”
Musonda echoed the call for unity, urging teammates to rally behind Sakala and respect the new chain of command for the good of the team.
In his first words as captain, Sakala struck a tone of humility and responsibility, fully aware of what the armband represents.
“I’m honored to be considered for the role of captain of the Chipolopolo,” he said.
“This comes with a huge responsibility not just to the team, but to the nation. I thank God, my coach, and my teammates.”
With Sakala now leading the charge, Zambia head into the AFCON build-up with renewed purpose, fresh leadership, and a clear message: Chipolopolo are ready to stand tall.
