Over the weekend, Lagos did what Lagos does best, fill the city with events. From buffet tables bending under the weight of jollof rice to bottles clinking from table to table, it was the usual carnival of music, fashion, gossip and controlled chaos, but in the midst of all the glitz and grapevines, one moment rose above the noise, not just an event, but a full-blown emotional spectacle. Let’s call it “The Real KWAM 1 Moment.”
Picture this: King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, the fuji maestro himself, doing what only KWAM 1 can do, holding a crowd captive with live-band magic. Spirits were high, the drums were happy. Then, from the crowd, Bisola Badmus, a nollywood actress, yes, that actress, stepped forward, son in tow, walking with the confidence of someone about to make breaking news.
Before anyone could ask “what’s happening?”, she had already presented her teenage son to KWAM 1 like a royal decree. It was giving “Behold your son, please accept him before the world on my behalf”. Nollywood couldn’t have scripted it better.
Years ago, this same actress publicly claimed she had a child (Now, Abdulmalik, Marshal Ayinde), for the legendary musician, a claim he swiftly rejected, but life has a funny way of spinning plot twists. Maybe DNA happened. Maybe enlightenment happened. Maybe both. Whatever the case, the young boy is now acknowledged, and this weekend, he was presented on a public stage with all the subtlety of a Nollywood season finale.
While many saw it as a touching, long-awaited reunion, Nollywood filmmaker Biodun Stephen was not having it. In her words, “You’ve raised this boy to teenage age… why put him through this public embarrassment now?”
Some netizens feel, a quiet family meeting could have done the job, but then again, this is entertainment, where ‘low-key’ sometimes retires early, and moments are best served with flashing cameras and a cheering audience.
One thing is certain: The music was loud, the emotions were louder, and the weekend managed to give us the kind of drama only Lagos and KWAM 1 can deliver.
