The Delta House of Assembly has reaffirmed its commitment to enacting laws that foster economic growth, social justice, and sustainable development in the state.
The Speaker, Mr Dennis Guwor said this at the resumption of the House from its annual recess yesterday in Asaba.
Guwor emphasised the assembly’s commitment to strengthening its oversight functions to ensure transparency, accountability, and value for public resources.
He stressed the need for the assembly to work collaboratively with the executive and other stakeholders while safeguarding its independence.
Guwor advised the lawmakers to respond decisively to the needs of their constituents, particularly in areas of infrastructure, youth empowerment, education, healthcare, and security.
The speaker highlighted the assembly’s participation in a leadership development training programme on “Strategies for Inclusive Economic Growth” at the Centre for Enterprise, Manchester Metropolitan University, United Kingdom.
According to him, the key takeaways from the training include, the surest path to sustainable development is inclusive governance, and evidence-based policy decisions.
Guwor also identified legislative leadership as key takeaway from the training programme.
“I recall in one of the sessions, the role played by universities and other tertiary institutions in society development, how government harness research resources in driving sustainable development by collaborating with these tertiary institutions.
”Fortunately, Delta State Government has four universities amid other Federal and Private universities.
”We will encourage the state government policy towards exploring the research resources of these universities in the sustainable development of the state.
”These insights will not remain in theory. They will be translated into action through our legislative agenda, committee work, and oversight responsibilities in this session, ” he said.
The assembly also commemorated the 34th anniversary of the state’s creation as well as congratulated Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori on the successful hosting of the 9th National Youth Games.
The speaker also commended the governor for the ongoing infrastructure development projects across the state.
He expressed appreciation for the award and construction of a dual-purpose building for the assembly’s clinic and the Delta State House of Assembly Service Commission.
”Let me also commend the governor for the massive ongoing infrastructure development across the state.
”Two very remarkable projects awarded while the House was on recess is the construction of flyovers at Uromi junction, Ika South Local Government Area, and Otovwodo junction in Ughelli North Local Government Area.
”No doubt, these are signature projects by the governor.
”I wish to also convey the heartfelt appreciation to the governor for the award and ongoing construction of the dual-purpose building for the Assembly’s Clinic and the Delta State House of Assembly Service Commission,” he said.
