The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has opened an investigation into Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, who represents Sokoto South Senatorial District and is a key figure in the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Tambuwal, a lawyer by training, first rose to national prominence in 2011 when he emerged as Speaker of the House of Representatives in a dramatic upset that defied his then party’s zoning arrangements. He later defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2015 general elections, before returning to the PDP in 2018 to contest for president. In 2019, he secured a second term as Governor of Sokoto State. After leaving office in 2023, Tambuwal joined the opposition coalition, becoming a central figure in the alliance against President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He was reportedly invited to the EFCC’s Abuja headquarters on Monday in connection with alleged improper cash withdrawals totaling about ₦189 billion during his tenure as governor.

When contacted by the media, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed the report but declined further comment, saying the commission does not speak on ongoing investigations.

Political analysts say the development could rattle the ADC-led opposition coalition, as Tambuwal has been one of its high-profile strategists and a vocal critic of the government.
