The Rotary Club of Kano has donated 12 modern sewing machines to the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State Command, as part of its humanitarian efforts and commitment to community development.
The piece of information is in a statement issued by Musbahu Nasarawa, the Public Relations Officer of the NCoS, Kano Command, yesterday in Kano.
Nasarawa stated that the sewing machines, valued at over N3 million, were aimed at supporting the reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates through vocational skills acquisition.
He noted that the machines were officially handed over to the Controller of Corrections, Kano State Command, Mr Ado Inuwa, during a ceremony held at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kano.
He quoted Inuwa as expressing gratitude to the Rotary Club for the gesture.
Inuwa assured judicious use of the machines to advance reform programmes, emphasising that “vocational training is key to preparing inmates for life after incarceration.”
He also conveyed the appreciation of the Controller-General of Corrections, Mr Sylvester Nwakuche, to the Rotary Club, urging well-meaning individuals and organisations to emulate the gesture.
He emphasised the importance of sustained support for the service’s mission to achieve effective offender management and contribute to society.
DCC Ibrahim Isah-Rambo, the Officer-in-Charge of the Custodial Centre, presented a souvenir on behalf of the inmates to the Rotary Club, while Rotarian Tajudeen Olatunbosun, President of the Rotary Club of Kano, said the donation was to empower disadvantaged groups.
Olatunbosun said the gesture was also to enhance the tailoring workshop of the custodial centre, equipping inmates with practical skills to reduce recidivism and assist in their reintegration into society.
He encouraged the inmates to take the opportunity seriously and stay positively engaged during their time in custody.
The event was attended by the former District Governor of Rotary District 9127, Mr Sagab Ahmed, with other rotary leaders.
