The African Table Tennis Federation (ATTF) has urged sustained investment to boost Nigeria’s table tennis performance, particularly among female players.
It also called for stronger national programmes and better youth development initiatives.
ATTF President, Wahid Oshodi, made the appeal in an interview with NAN yesterday in Lagos.
He stressed that early talent discovery, quality coaching, and consistent support were vital for Nigeria to become a global force in table tennis.
“In the boys’ events, Nigeria won three of six categories and reached all singles semi-finals. In the girls’ category, much work remains,” he said.
He urged the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation, with National Sports Commission backing, to secure funding for full-time coaches, scout younger players, and provide equipment and technical guidance.
Highlighting Africa Hopes Week, a development programme for U-12 players, Oshodi said dedicated training camps could help nurture future champions.
“To bridge the girls’ gap, we must host female-only championships and camps. This will provide exposure and refine their skills,” he added.
Oshodi also stressed the need for regular training and capacity-building courses for coaches to improve their knowledge and technical expertise.
“With the right investment, quality coaching, and adopting ATTF and International Table Tennis Federation programmes, Nigeria can compete with the best,” he said.
He affirmed that the ATTF remained committed to developing table tennis in Africa and elevating the sport to greater heights.
