ABUJA — The suspended pilot of ValueJet, Captain Oluranti Ogoyi, has accused popular Fuji musician, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM 1), of assaulting her by pouring the contents of a gold flask on her during a confrontation at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on August 5.

The incident, which caused significant disruption to the flight, has led to the suspension of both Captain Ogoyi and her co-pilot, Flight Officer Ivan Oloba, by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). KWAM 1 has also been blacklisted from all Nigerian flights, following a directive from the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN).

In a detailed report addressed to aviation authorities, Captain Ogoyi described the moment she stepped out of the cockpit to resolve the situation after KWAM 1 allegedly refused to allow security to inspect his gold flask during boarding.

“Ground staff had asked to verify the contents of the flask, as required by procedure, but he refused and insisted on boarding. He was drinking from the flask and refused all appeals to comply,” she said.

“When I stepped out of the cockpit to intervene personally and try to calm him down, he suddenly opened the flask and poured its contents on me, airport security officers, and some passengers standing nearby,” the pilot said.

The ValueJet flight was preparing to depart Abuja for Lagos when the disruption occurred. According to Captain Ogoyi, the musician had become confrontational at the foot of the aircraft stairs, forcing security to intervene.

“Airport security advised that he not be allowed to board due to his conduct. I agreed, prioritising the safety of all passengers and crew,” she said.

Despite being denied entry, KWAM 1 reportedly lingered near the aircraft, allegedly obstructing its movement. “After shutting the aircraft doors, I observed that Mr. Ayinde remained near the aircraft, which delayed our departure. Only after he was removed from the vicinity did I commence taxiing,” she noted.

Reacting to the incident, Minister Festus Keyamo said video footage corroborated the pilot’s account and revealed KWAM 1 moving across the tarmac and blocking the aircraft’s path. “This is a serious violation. It’s comparable to a hostage situation,” the minister said.

Keyamo criticised both the musician and the flight crew — the former for breaching security and the latter for proceeding with taxiing before confirming the tarmac was clear. He directed the NCAA to place KWAM 1 on a no-fly list and warned all domestic and international carriers to comply or face sanctions.

“No passenger, no matter how influential, has the right to endanger flight operations or assault aviation personnel,” Keyamo stated.

The NCAA has also forwarded a petition to the Attorney General of the Federation and the Inspector General of Police, seeking prosecution of the musician for his actions, which they say endangered flight safety.

The incident has triggered widespread concern across Nigeria’s aviation sector, with stakeholders calling for more robust enforcement of airport conduct rules.

…Captain Oluranti Ogoyi: The Woman Behind the Cockpit

Captain Oluranti Ogunwale-Ogoyi, the suspended ValueJet pilot at the centre of the August 5 confrontation with Fuji musician King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM 1), is no stranger to turbulence — both in the skies and in life. Long before headlines placed her at the heart of a national debate on aviation safety and celebrity entitlement, Ogoyi had carved out a place for herself as one of Nigeria’s rising stars in commercial aviation.

A daughter of former Osun Central Senator, Felix Kola Ogunwale, Ogoyi’s journey into aviation was anything but conventional. Drawn to flying from a young age, she trained at Phoenix East Aviation in Daytona Beach, Florida, where she earned her pilot certifications. Her career took flight at Arik Air, where she distinguished herself and steadily rose through the ranks. In September 2021, she achieved a landmark promotion to the rank of Captain, a moment that drew admiration from Arik Air’s top brass, including CEO Captain Roy Ilegbodu, Director of Flight Operations Captain Adetokunbo Adekunbi, and then Chief Pilot Captain Chris Najomo, who now heads the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

Known affectionately among her peers as “Rantilicious,” Captain Ogoyi has earned a reputation for professionalism, competence, and composure, qualities that have now been tested in the full glare of the public eye. The recent incident with KWAM 1, where she alleged that the musician poured the contents of a flask on her during a boarding dispute at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, has ignited debate across the aviation industry and wider society. Following the confrontation, both she and her co-pilot were suspended by the NCAA, even as the agency simultaneously blacklisted the musician and called for his prosecution. The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Keyamo, has since described KWAM 1’s conduct as unacceptable and likened it to a hostage situation, while also criticising the decision to taxi the aircraft without fully confirming that the obstruction had been cleared.

Despite the controversy, those who know Captain Ogoyi recall her quiet resilience and dedication to her craft. In past interviews, she’s spoken about her early fascination with the flight deck, often noting how she rarely saw women piloting planes during her childhood. That absence inspired her to change the narrative: a mission she has pursued with unwavering focus. Over the years, she has never reported any discrimination from passengers based on her gender, a testament to her skill and confidence in the cockpit.

Captain Ogoyi is married to fellow pilot Isaac Ogoyi Jr., who has flown for Arik Air and later worked with RwandAir and Uganda Airlines. Together, they represent one of Nigeria’s most accomplished aviation couples, sharing a life shaped by discipline, global training, and mutual support.

Though currently under suspension pending investigation, Captain Ogoyi’s track record and conduct before this incident have earned her both respect and admiration in aviation circles. As the ValueJet-KWAM 1 case unfolds, it remains to be seen how her career and reputation will emerge from the storm. But for now, she stands as a symbol of both the opportunities and challenges that define modern Nigerian aviation.
